November Extra Blog

Last time I saw my new mentor, he gave me an assignment to learn how to play the harmonica. During the month of November, I practiced playing very much. I would create tracks on my computer with me playing guitar, and I would add harmonica recordings and layer it over the guitar. I did this very many times. I created a little video of my own animation and accompanied it with harmonica playing in the background. I thought this would be a neat little project to try because I figured it is very similar to composing scores for movies, which is something I would very much like to do for a living. I created several videos of my animations/music, but only one video had harmonica in it. There are five videos like this total.

Since my independent component idea is to create my own little reel of my work, I gave myself a deadline for compositions, which is December 18. I have five compositions at the moment so I'm pacing myself pretty well. I had one of my mentors critique two of the songs and he gave me some pointers on making them more "hooky." Next time I see him, which is probably sometime next week, I'll have him critique the other songs and show him the videos.

EQ

Research

1. I reviewed the rule of three for writing an eq.

2. Review the following eq's and determine if they follow the rule of three. Say why the do or don't.
A) What is the most important factor in healthy weight loss?
Yes. It is not a yes/no question, it allows for an argument, and the wording is clear
B) What is most important in securing a conviction in a criminal investigation.
No. The wording is a little unclear.
C) What is most important in creating a hairstyle that satisfies a customer?
No. Very broad and the wording needs adjustments.
D) How can an anesthesiologist best treat chronic pain?
Yes. Very specific, wording is clear, allows for arguments.

3. Write another draft of your eq for your senior project.
How can a musician best manage their own career.

Lesson 1 Reflection

Presentation

1. Positive Statement

What are you most proud of in your Lesson 1 Presentation and why?

I'm very proud of the content I shared because it was not vague. I feel that someone with no prior knowledge on my topic would feel very informed. It also went smoother than anticipated, which I liked because I did not have to suddenly stop the presentation to mention something I might have forgotten.

2. Questions to Consider

a. What assessment would you give yourself on your Lesson 1 Presentation?

P

b. Explain why you deserve that grade using evidence from the component one contract.

I feel a "P" is an appropriate grade because I addressed everything the worksheet asked, engaged the audience, and did not lack much time.

3. What worked for you in Lesson 1?

My hook worked because it was creative and applied to everyone in the classroom.

4. (What didn't work) If you had a time machine, what would you have done differently to improve your lesson one?

I would have organized my presentation in a different way in order to add more information and to give the audience a better understanding. I felt they order in which I stated some information was a bit rough.

October Extra Blog

So, I have not seen my main mentor in a while, but I met a new one very unexpectedly. It was my dad's birthday the other day and we went to this cafe. He mistook this one guy for his friend. This one guy happened to be an independent musician playing in several bands for a living (much to my interest). We got to talking and he told me several stories of how he started playing guitar, and I told him my situation.  We exchanged information and he gave me a brand new harmonica and assigned me to learn how to play it by the next time we met up in order to build multi-instrumental skills. He then said,"If you don't learn how to play it, I'm taking it back."

Blog 8 - Research and Working EQ

Research
1. What is an efficient way someone can have a successful career as a songwriter?
2. Songwriters are more likely to become successful by constantly releasing new material that is innovative and appealing.
3. The most important source I used to come up with an answer to my eq was a book called "How MusicWorks" by David Byrne. I find this book helpful because the author explains ways in which he became recognized in the music industry and how innovation has always been a key to success.
4. I am doing mentorship with Tim Murphy of Burbank Guitar Studios, and he is teaching me how to construct songs in a way that are both pleasing to me and the audience. He says that the ear is trained to hear certain things and we need to write what they are trained to hear.

Blog 7: Independent Component 1 Approval

Independent Component.

1. For my independent component, I will compose and record an album of music. I will compose all music myself and have it reviewed by my mentor, or other professionals, and take feedback given from them to make adjustments as I see fit.

2.  Approximately thirty minutes of material will be ultimately recorded. The process of writing a part for every single instrument (guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, etc.), writing the lyrics, rehearsing, speaking with professionals for accomodations and reccomendations, recording every single instrument with professionals, mastering the recordings, and doing physical album layouts (artwork and pressing), will be what I'll be working on for a minimum of thirty hours.

3. To explore my topic in more depth I will do research on music theory in order to compose the music, I will do self-promotioning in order to make the music marketable, and i will learn production from professionals in order to go into more depth with my topic, music entrepreneurship.

September Extra Blog

This is a picture of the recording process for a song that I am currently working on with my mentor. I write all the parts and play all the instruments and he gives me suggestions in ways I could either improve the song or make it more marketable. Since my topic is music entrepreneurship, this helps me because I am receiving beneficial feedback.

Blog 5 - Mentorship Reflection

Research

1. My mentorship, as of now, has been really useful. I have recieved plentiful information that relates directly to my topic, music entrepreneurship. When I was in ninth and tenth grade, I took guitar lessons from this gentlemen in Burbank at Burbank Guitar Studios. I returned for my senior project and I am now his protege. As of now, I have only been given various information and have not experienced any hands-on experience, but I have appointments to do so. This mentorship is much better than my previous one.

2. The most important article of research I read was David Byrne's, How Music Works. I trust this information to be the most reliable/professional because David Byrne is an academy award-winning musician, a member of the rock n roll hall of fame, and an intellectual person. He also speaks of all aspects of the music industry, so his credentials would justify that he knows what he's talking about.

August Extra Blog

So, during the summer I did not have a very efficient mentorship. I was an assistant at a car dealership, where I was supposed to learn entrepreneur skills. The outcome was not to my advantage because I wasn't really able to apply what I learned to products other than cars. So, I found a new mentorship at Burbank Guitar Studios, which is more appropriate for my topic, music entrepreneurship. I had my first meeting with my new mentor on Friday and I very much enjoyed it. I conducted the first interview and he gave me really useful information about who else I should talk to and what books to check out, as well as useful information on promoting and songwriting. I have my next appointment with him this Friday.

Summer Mentorship Component

Mentorship

1. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13FsxGiJAsIXNGgBYajCMPcc5hopX69o3v_wn0e_6818/edit#gid=1155028493

2. Anthony Warr (909)988-6717

3.  How does an entrepreneur advertise or gain recognition?
How is business efficient in a partnership?
What post secondary education is required to be successful as an entrepreneur?
What is the general cost to start/buy a business?
Are businesses failing at a quicker rate in the past ten years than ever before in the US?
     How is a business represented?

4. The useful advice and knowledge I received during my mentorship was the most important thing I gained because they could be applied to both entrepeneurship and business at the executive level. In addition to this, I was able to get a hands on approach to how a business runs, which is valuable because it provided insight on how I could eventually utilize a business.

5. I am planning to do my senior project on entrepreneurship through music. I chose this because I am passionate about music and my mentor taught me that if you operate a business efficiently and apply the correct skills, you can become very succesful in life. I am now able to amalgamate the skills I have learned in entrepreneurship with my skills in music to form a successful career.

1. I saw the ski patrol, basketball, coaching softball, information technology, cal poly parking trans. services, coaching soccer, yearbook basketball, HIV, Hippotherapy, high school basketball, information technology, dressage, nonprofit educational services, and lending presentations.
2. How long are the activities supposed to last? I thought it was a two-hour presentation and the presenters only spoke for 30 minutes.
3. I believe the most important part of the senior project is the mentorship because that's where experience and a majority of the information comes from.
4. At this point in time, I plan on doing my presentation on economics.
5. I will be interning at my cousin's economic firm.
